There is no better time to learn more about an IUD and have one inserted than the summertime. You have more time to relax after the procedure, and because the insertion is quick, you can get back to basking in the summer sun and enjoying summer activities in no time at all. Let’s take a closer look at what an IUD is and how it can benefit you.
What is an IUD?
An IUD stands for intrauterine device and is a safe, easy, and effective form of birth control. Depending on the type of IUD, a single IUD can be effective for 3-12 years.
Benefits of an IUD
There are numerous benefits you can take advantage of when you have an IUD, including the following:
- Safe and highly effective method of birth control
- More than 99% effective
- Quick insertion
- Can last for anywhere from 3-12 years
- Can aid in managing difficult period symptoms like heavy bleeding and cramping
Dispelling Common Misconceptions About IUD Insertion
The process of IUD insertion and the IUD itself is often misunderstood. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the most common misconceptions surrounding IUDs and the truth behind these myths.
Myth 1: IUD Insertion is Extremely Painful
Some patients do describe discomfort or cramping during IUD insertion, but at MAIA Gynecology, we do offer oral sedation to any patient who wants it to ensure all our patients are comfortable throughout the procedure. We don’t want any discomfort to stop you from receiving the care you need.
Myth 2: IUDs Cause Infertility
This myth couldn’t be further from the truth. An IUD cannot cause infertility. In fact, after the IUD is removed, you will be able to get pregnant immediately.
Myth 3: IUDs Make Your Period More Painful
The copper IUD can lead to more cramping and painful periods, but those side effects typically dissipate after the first few months. Hormonal IUDs usually cause the opposite effects: they often make periods much lighter and less painful. We often use hormonal IUDs as a treatment option for heavy and painful periods, as well as conditions like endometriosis, endometrial hyperplasia, and the abnormal uterine bleeding associated with perimenopause.
What To Expect During an IUD Insertion Appointment
To start, we’ll begin by discussing your medical history and what you can expect during the procedure. The insertion appointment is usually scheduled toward the end of your period, which helps make the insertion easier and results in less bleeding after insertion as well. If you opted for oral sedation, you will take that prior to your appointment and make sure you have someone to drive you home.
During the procedure, we’ll let you know what we’re doing every step of the way to ensure your comfort. The actual IUD insertion takes only a few minutes. Most patients report mild cramping, usually not worse than a period cramp, which resolves within a few minutes.
For the rest of the day, we will encourage you to relax and take it easy – you’ve taken an important step in managing your reproductive health. Take the day to enjoy the warmth that comes with summer in Chicago!
