If you’re experiencing abnormal bleeding, infertility, or have unusual results with a Pap smear, the next step may be a D & C. This procedure can be used to diagnose or treat a condition. It differs from patient to patient.
What is D & C?
Dilatation and curettage (D & C) is an operation performed where we dilate the cervix so that we can scrape away and remove uterine tissue with a spoon-shaped instrument (called a curette) for testing.
It may be combined with a hysteroscopy, where a light and camera are inserted into the uterus to view the lining on a screen.
Why is D & C Needed?
A D & C can be done to diagnose a number of different conditions, including uterine polyps, uterine infection, fibroids, and uterine cancer. It’s often performed if you’re experiencing the following issues:
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Bleeding after menopause
- Unusual results found during a Pap smear or HPV test
- Endometrial intraepithelial hyperplasia
- Infertility

Meet The TeamD & C can also be used to treat a condition. When this is the case, the entire contents of the uterine lining are removed. This is done to treat the following:
- Uterine infection
- Fibroids
- Uterine cysts and polyps
- Uterine tumor or molar pregnancy
- Excessive bleeding after birth (remaining placenta is removed from the uterus)
- Noncancerous cervical or uterine polyps
- Uterine cancer
It can also be done following a miscarriage or abortion to remove any leftover tissue that has not naturally passed.
What to Expect During D & C
Before the procedure, we will ask you to empty your bladder. You will then be placed on the examination table with your feet and legs supported by the stirrups.
To start your D & C, we will administer some form of anesthesia (general or local) to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure. Next, Dr. Wolowick or Dr. Mitchell will examine the vulva and vaginal walls that can be seen. They will then insert a speculum to expand the vaginal walls, and a surgical dilator will be used to dilate the cervix. From there, the curette will remove some or all of the inner contents of the uterus. If done for diagnostic purposes, the sample will be sent to the lab for further testing.
The whole procedure will take about 5-10 minutes.
D & C Recovery
You will be able to leave the same day as your surgery, but you may need someone to drive you home due to the anesthesia. Dr. Wolowick or Dr. Mitchell will then let you know how best to take care of yourself after the procedure.
You may feel some cramping, spotting, or mild discomfort after the procedure, but that’s completely normal. You’ll want to shower, avoid sexual intercourse, use pads instead of tampons, and avoid going swimming for the first 2-3 days afterward. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever for any discomfort.
You should be able to resume your normal level of activity after a few days. As your uterus will build a new lining after your D & C, your next period after the procedure may be early or late.
