Colposcopy with Lutech Video Colposcope

Book Appointment Now

Knowing what’s going on the surface of your vagina, vulva, and cervix is vital to maintaining good gynecological health. That’s where a colposcopy comes in. With this minimally invasive procedure, we can look for any abnormalities and start necessary treatment if we do find anything.

What is a Colposcopy?

A colposcopy is a type of procedure used to check your cervix, the wall of your vagina, and your vulva for signs of abnormal, cancerous, or pre-cancerous tissue. During the procedure, a special microscope called a colposcope magnifies the tissue to make it easier for your provider to see abnormalities, and if they do, they can then take a biopsy to be tested. It can be an effective tool when diagnosing cervical, vaginal, or vulvar cancer.

A colposcopy can also be used to test for genital warts or polyps.

At MAIA, we use the Lutech Video Colposcope to ensure we get a clear picture of what’s going on.

Why is a colposcopy Needed?

Colposcopies are typically performed if an abnormality is seen or detected during a Pap smear. This can include abnormal blood vessels, tissues, colors, or patterns. They may also be performed after a pelvic exam with abnormal results or if you tested positive for HPV (human papillomavirus).

What to Expect During a Colposcopy with Lutech Video Colposcope

A colposcopy with the Lutech Video Colposcope is a relatively simple procedure. Before the procedure, we recommend that you not be menstruating or pregnant. You should also avoid any vaginal penetration, like sex or penetration with fingers, sex toys, or tampons, for 48 before your appointment.

To start the procedure, we’ll ask you to empty your bladder and then undress from the waist down. From there, you’ll lie down on the examination table and put your feet in the stirrups. Dr. Wolowick or Dr. Mitchell will then insert a speculum to widen the vagina so the cervix is visible.

From there, they will use the Lutech Video Colposcope to view a magnified picture of your cervix, vaginal walls, and vulva. If they see any abnormal tissue, they may perform a biopsy at that time for further testing. A numbing solution will be used before the biopsy is taken.

The image your provider receives with the Lutech Video Colposcope is much clearer than the traditional Colposcope. It is uploaded to their computer for further viewing and to your patient file as well. At most, the procedure will take about ten minutes.

Recovery

You should be able to resume normal activities immediately after your appointment. You may have some mild cramping, vaginal discharge, or some spotting for a day or two, but that’s about it. If a biopsy was taken, you will want to avoid penetrative sex and tampons until you are fully healed. It typically takes about a week.

You can take a pain reliever if you experience any cramping or soreness. Dr. Wolowick and Dr. Mitchell will let you know which pain relievers are best so as to not increase the chance of bleeding.

Results from any testing will take a few days to arrive. At that point, we’ll discuss the next steps, or if everything looks fine, no further treatment will be needed.
