Abnormal bleeding can be a symptom of many different gynecological issues, from fibroids and polyps to PCOS to cancer. That’s why it’s so important to have any abnormal bleeding checked out by a board-certified gynecologist to discover the cause of the bleeding and treat it.
What is Abnormal Bleeding?
Abnormal bleeding can cover a lot of different things. It can include heavier than normal periods, bleeding after menopause, or bleeding between periods. If you’re seeing blood coming from the vagina and it’s not during your period, it’s typically referred to as abnormal bleeding and is something you want to be checked by a board-certified gynecologist like Dr. Wolowick and Dr. Mitchell.
One of the ways we check the cause of the abnormal bleeding is with a sonohysterogram.

Meet The TeamAfter Your Sonohysterogram
You should be able to go home and return to your normal routine immediately after your sonohysterogram. At most, you may have some mild cramping or watery discharge from the saline. You may also notice some spotting, but that’s completely normal.
You will receive your results either the same day or within the next few days. Based on those results, we’ll let you know the next steps and if further treatment is necessary.
Sonohysterogram for Abnormal Bleeding
What is a sonohysterogram? Also known as a saline infusion sonogram (SIS), it’s an ultrasound imaging procedure that Dr. Wolowick and Dr. Mitchell use to see inside the uterus, allowing them to better diagnose the cause of any abnormal bleeding.
Before the procedure, we’ll ask that you empty your bladder and collect a small sample for a pregnancy test. We’ll then ask you to undress from the waist down and lie down on the table with your knees bent and legs open. They will insert a speculum and then a catheter into the vagina and cervix. This will put the saline solution into the uterus.
The imaging device is then inserted into the vagina and cervix and will record the different structures and shapes inside the uterus. It can also see the source of abnormal bleeding, including polyps, fibroids, blockages in the fallopian tubes, and the endometrium. It typically takes no more than 30 minutes. You may experience some slight cramping, but that’s about it.
It’s different from ultrasounds you have while pregnant, as this scan should not be performed on pregnant people or those who might be pregnant. It’s often performed by day 10 of the menstrual cycle, as the lining of the uterus is usually thinner, and we can achieve better images.
