While polyps are typically noncancerous, it’s important to have them removed in case they turn into cancer. Removing endometrial and cervical polyps can also eliminate any symptoms they are causing. With the expert skills of Dr. Wolowick and Dr. Mitchell in Downers Grove, you could not be in better hands.

What Are Endometrial and Cervical Polyps?

Cervical polyps and endometrial polyps are fingerlike growths on the cervix and lining of the uterus, respectively. While they don’t always cause symptoms, symptoms can include heavy periods, bleeding after intercourse, abnormal vaginal bleeding after menopause or between periods, and yellow or white mucus.

Polyps are often found during a Pap Smear or ultrasound. While these polyps often don’t cause any issues, they can be precancerous and need to be removed.

Who’s at Risk of Endometrial and Cervical Polyps?

The exact cause of cervical and endometrial polyps is not known, but they both tend to show up when there are increased levels of estrogen in the system. Other risk factors include:

  • Obesity
  • Use of tamoxifen
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Women ages 20 to 40 are more prone to polyps

How are Endometrial and Cervical Polyps Removed?

Endometrial Polyps

To start your procedure, we offer light or full sedation. Dr. Wolowick or Dr. Mitchell will then guide the hysteroscope through the vagina, through the cervix, and into the uterus. The uterus will then be inflated to see the polyps more easily. They will then use a special tool to remove the polyp from the endometrium completely.

Cervical Polyps

We also offer sedation when removing cervical polyps. A hysteroscope or a speculum will then be inserted so your provider can clearly see the cervix. They will then use a special tool (often a small wire) to remove the polyp(s) from the cervix.

The polyp will then be sent to the lab to ensure there are no signs of cancer.

Aftercare

Most patients can go home the same day of the polyp removal, but you may experience some cramping or vaginal bleeding for a day or two after the procedure. You may also experience some watery discharge for a few weeks after the procedure.

You should relax for the rest of the day after the procedure. You can also use over-the-counter pain medication to help with any discomfort.

You’ll want to avoid lifting, pushing, or pulling heavy objects for at least a couple of weeks after the removal and avoid sex until your doctor gives you the OK (typically around two weeks).
