Diagnosing and treating abnormal cells found on the cervix is one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer. One of the methods of diagnosing and treating those cells is a LEEP. This innovative procedure can ensure we remove abnormalities and get you back to having a completely healthy cervix.

What is a LEEP?

Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) is a treatment that is used to prevent cervical cancer. It uses a wire loop heated with an electric current to remove the precancerous or abnormal cells from the cervix. The cells are then sent to the pathologist to determine whether they are cancerous or not.

A LEEP procedure can lead to early diagnosis and prevent cervical cancer.

Who is a LEEP for?

LEEP is typically done when cervical or vaginal problems are found during a pelvic exam, Pap smear, or colposcopy.

A LEEP may also be used to diagnose or treat polyps, cervical dysplasia, and genital warts.

Meet The Team

What to Expect During a LEEP Procedure

To start the procedure, we’ll ask you to empty your bladder and undress from the waist down. You’ll then lie down on the exam table and place your legs in the stirrups. Our Downers Grove office does offer anesthesia if needed.

Dr. Wolowick or Dr. Mitchell will then insert the speculum into the vagina to spread the vaginal walls so they can see the cervix. They will inject the cervix with lidocaine to help with your comfort.

They’ll then use an acetic acid solution to make the abnormal tissues more visible. The LEEP wire will then be inserted into the vagina and pass through the abnormal tissue to remove it. You may feel slight pressure or cramping. The tissue will then be sent to the lab for testing.

A LEEP takes about 10-20 minutes in total.

Aftercare

After a LEEP, you may rest for a few minutes after the procedure before going home. You may experience some mild cramping or bleeding for a day or two after. You may also have vaginal discharge for 1-3 weeks. Over-the-counter pain medication and a sanitary pad can help with those side effects.

You’ll want to get plenty of rest after the procedure. You’ll also want to avoid tampons, penetrative sex, and using sex toys for four weeks after your LEEP or until your provider tells you it’s okay. You’ll also want to avoid strenuous activities for at least 48 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a LEEP procedure painful?

A LEEP procedure is not considered painful due to the local anesthesia that is used to numb the treatment area. Most of the discomfort stems from the prick of the needle and cramping during recovery.

Will LEEP cure HPV?

A LEEP procedure will not cure HPV. It can, however, remove the abnormal cervical cells that developed as a result of HPV, preventing them from turning into cervical cancer.

What is LEEP procedure recovery like?

During recovery, you may experience some mild to moderate cramping for a few days. You will also notice vaginal discharge that is brown in color due to the medicine used during the procedure. It is also normal to experience some light spotting.

Is LEEP procedure covered by insurance?

If your LEEP procedure is considered medically necessary, it will be covered by most insurance companies.

Can LEEP procedures cause an early period?

A LEEP procedure will not affect your menstrual cycle, but it can cause spotting during your recovery. The spotting may be akin to a light period.

How many LEEP procedures can you have?

LEEP procedures are safe to repeat, but the number of procedures you are allowed to have can only be determined by you and your OB/GYN. If you need frequent LEEP procedures, other surgical options like a hysterectomy may be explored.

How much does a LEEP procedure cost?

LEEP procedures can vary in price depending on many factors, such as where you go for your procedure, and your insurance plan.

Can a LEEP procedure cause infertility?

There are rarely any impacts on a patient’s fertility after a LEEP procedure. Your OBGYN is aware that a short cervix can cause issues in a future pregnancy, so will likely not recommend repeat LEEP procedures unless absolutely necessary.

Can a LEEP procedure cause irregular periods?

Very rarely a LEEP procedure can cause scarring on the cervical opening. If the scarring causes the passage to narrow or close completely, it can lead to irregular bleeding. This can usually be fixed with cervical dilation done in the office. A LEEP does not affect your menstrual cycle.

Who performs a LEEP procedure?

A LEEP procedure is typically performed in an OB/GYN office by your OB/GYN. Other providers, like your family physician or a supervised resident, can also perform LEEP procedures.
