IUD insertion can be quick and easy at MAIA with board-certified gynecologists Dr. Wolowick and Dr. Mitchell. IUD insertion can be uncomfortable, but with the option for sedation or anesthesia, we ensure all our patients are comfortable when taking advantage of the benefits of this effective birth control option.

What to Expect During IUD Insertion?

The insertion of an IUD typically only takes 5-10 minutes. We’ll have you lie down on the exam table and place your feet in the stirrups. We’ll then administer anesthesia if necessary. From there, Dr. Wolowick or Dr. Mitchell will perform a quick pelvic exam. They’ll then insert a speculum to hold the vagina open. Next, they’ll use an antiseptic solution to clean the vagina and cervix. Finally, they’ll insert the IUD through the opening of the cervix and into the uterus.

When the IUD is inserted, you may feel some cramping or pain. It can be mild for some, while others experience more severe pain. Luckily, it only lasts about a minute or two (if sedation or anesthesia were not used)

You may feel the strings coming from the IUD at first, but within a few days, you won’t notice them at all.

Aftercare

After the IUD is in place, you will be able to go home and return to your normal activities. You may experience some discomfort, dizziness, and bleeding for a day or two, but those side effects will subside on their own. You’ll want to take it easy for most of the day after insertion. Over-the-counter pain medications can help with any pain you feel from cramping, and panty liners can catch any spotting.

In the first few months, your period may be irregular as your body gets used to the IUD (especially if it’s a hormonal IUD). Your period may be heavier at first and then become lighter the longer you have the IUD.

We will also schedule a follow-up appointment about 6-8 weeks after insertion to check the position of the device.

When you need to have your IUD replaced depends on the type of IUD you choose. They can last for anywhere from 3-12 years.

FAQs on IUD Insertion

What is an IUD, and how does it work as a birth control method?

An IUD (Intrauterine Device) is a tiny, flexible, T-shaped plastic device inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider. It provides highly effective, long-acting, reversible contraception and functions continuously for 3 to 12 years, depending on the brand and type. A hormonal IUD works by releasing a small amount of progestin that thickens the cervical mucus to block sperm. The copper IUD acts as a natural spermacide, making the uterus toxic to sperm.

How long does an IUD insertion procedure take?

The actual IUD insertion takes only about 1 to 5 minutes. However, plan to spend 30 to 45 minutes at your doctor's office or clinic in total. This accounts for the initial pelvic exam, measuring your uterus, and resting for a few minutes afterward to ensure you aren't dizzy.

What does IUD insertion feel like, and is it painful?

For some people, it feels like mild pressure or moderate period cramps. For others, it can cause severe, sudden pain that may lead to brief dizziness or nausea. At MAIA Gynecology, we do everything we can to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible during the process. This can include recommending pain medication before your appointment and offering anesthesia.

What pain management options are available for IUD insertion and removal, including IV sedation?

We offer both anesthesia and sedation for UID insertion and removal. We may also recommend taking pain medication before your appointment. Our team wants this to be as comfortable an experience as possible, and we will explain each step as we go.

Who is a good candidate for an IUD birth control option?

An IUD is an excellent, highly effective, and low-maintenance birth control option for most people with a uterus. It is particularly ideal for those seeking long-term pregnancy prevention without the hassle of taking a daily pill. It can also be beneficial for those with heavy or painful periods, as it can reduce cramps and flow.

How should I prepare for an IUD insertion appointment?

To prepare for your IUD insertion appointment, you’ll want to eat a light meal, take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory 30–60 minutes prior, and wear loose clothing. You will also want to avoid unprotected sex for two weeks beforehand to ensure you aren't pregnant at the time of the appointment.

What should I expect after an IUD is inserted?

Immediately after your IUD insertion, you may experience cramping and dizziness. This usually passes within a few minutes. Spotting or light bleeding is also normal and can last for a few days after the procedure.

How long do hormonal and non-hormonal IUDs last?

How long your IUD lasts depends on the brand. They can last anywhere from 3 to 12 years. Your provider will discuss longevity during your appointment.

How soon can I return to normal activities after IUD insertion?

You can typically return to normal activities, including work and light exercise, within 24 hours of your IUD insertion. It is completely normal to experience some mild cramping, spotting, or discomfort, but those side effects should pass within a few days.

When should I schedule a follow-up visit after my IUD placement?

You’ll want to schedule a follow-up appointment 4 to 6 weeks after your IUD insertion. This allows your provider to confirm the device is properly positioned and address any early complications.
