Endometrial Biopsy

Book Appointment Now

If you’re experiencing an irregular period, bleeding after menopause, or no period at all, it could mean there is an issue with the lining of your uterus. To determine the cause of your symptoms, we may perform an endometrial biopsy. By taking a small sample of tissue, we can look for abnormalities.

What is an Endometrial Biopsy?

Endometrial biopsy is a procedure where a small piece of the lining of the uterus (endometrium) is removed to examine more closely. Your doctor will be looking for abnormal cells, cancerous cells, or other irregularities. It’s usually done to find the reason for certain symptoms you’re experiencing.

Who Needs an Endometrial Biopsy?

An endometrial biopsy is typically done when a patient comes in with:

  • Irregular periods that are longer than normal or not getting a period at all
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Bleeding while on hormone therapy
  • Thickened uterine lining
  • Results from a Pap smear that showed irregular cells in the uterus

This procedure can also be done to diagnose endometrial cancer. However, not everyone should have an endometrial biopsy. We don’t perform an endometrial biopsy on pregnant people.

Meet The Team

Endometrial Biopsy Procedure

To start the endometrial biopsy, we’ll ask you to undress from the waist down and lie on the exam table with your feet in stirrups. It’s very similar to a pelvic exam. We do provide anesthesia if necessary. We want you to be comfortable no matter what procedure you’re having done.

From there, Dr. Wolowick or Dr. Mitchell will insert a speculum to hold open the vagina, The cervix will then be cleaned with an antiseptic solution, and a numbing medication may be applied to help with your comfort. We’ll then use a device to gently stretch the cervix opening so we can get to the uterus. You may feel some cramping at this stage.

We’ll then take a small sample of the endometrium, which will then be sent for testing. In total, the biopsy shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes, but it can take longer if anesthesia is used, as it will take time to kick in, and you’ll need time to wake up afterward.

Recovery & Results

After your biopsy, you can return to most of your normal activities, but if anesthesia is used, you will need someone to drive you home. You may experience some cramping and spotting after the biopsy. You can use over-the-counter pain medication for pain and a sanitary pad to catch any spotting. These side effects shouldn’t last longer than a few days.

Before you leave the office, you’ll also receive some recovery instructions. You’ll want to avoid tampons or placing anything inside the vagina for a week. You’ll also want to avoid strenuous activity, swimming, and taking a bath for a few days as you heal.

As for results, if the sample comes back normal, it means we didn’t find anything abnormal in the tissues taken. If the results are abnormal, it can mean you’re experiencing a few different issues, including:

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Uterine polyps
  • Infection
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Endometrial cancer
