What is an STD Screening?

An STD screening is done to detect the presence of certain STDs and ensure you receive the treatment you need if you test positive. Most STD screenings test for specific STDs or STIs, including chlamydia and gonorrhea, HIV, syphilis, hepatitis, genital herpes, and more.

When you should have an STD screening depends on a number of different factors, including your age, if you’re sexually active, and which STD you’re being screened for.

For gonorrhea and chlamydia, STD screening is typically recommended for women under 25 who are sexually active, women over 25 who are having sex with a new partner or multiple partners, men who have sex with men, people with HIV, and transgender women who have sex with men.

For HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis screenings, STD testing is recommended for people 15 to 65, and the test should be done yearly for those who are at a high risk of infection.

For genital herpes, testing is recommended for those showing symptoms.

What Causes STDs?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs). They are spread primarily by sexual contact and caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. They can pass through blood, semen, vaginal fluid, or other bodily fluids.

What to Expect During an STD Screening

STD testing is a relatively simple procedure. The type of STD screening you have done depends on the type of STI being screened for. Each STD has its own test. That being said, some of the STD testing available include:

  • Urine test: You will simply be asked to urinate into a cup. Often used to diagnose trichomoniasis or gonorrhea
  • Oral test: We will rub the inside of your mouth or throat with a swab
  • Blood test: Your provider will take blood from your arm and send it off for testing. Often used to look for syphilis, HIV, or herpes.
  • Physical exam: Dr. Wolowick or Dr. Mitchell will perform a physical exam of the genital area and look for warts, sores, rashes, irritation, or discharge
  • Blister or sore swab: If you are experiencing blisters or sores, we’ll take a sample of the fluid inside the sores or blisters
  • Genital swab: This is often done during a physical exam and involves your provider taking a sample of discharge or cells from the vagina, penis, or anus. It is typically done to diagnose HPV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, or herpes.

After your screening, you can return to your normal routine immediately. You should have no side effects from the testing.

Once the test results come back from your STD screening, it will show whether you have an STD or not. If you are diagnosed with a specific STD, there is no reason to be ashamed. There are a variety of treatment options and cures available. Once you have a diagnosis, it’s also vital to tell your partner or partners to ensure they can get tested.

STD Treatment Options

The treatment options available depend on the type of STI detected. Once your results come in, Dr. Wolowick or Dr. Mitchell will walk you through treatment options and answer any questions you have. They’ll then get you started with a treatment plan to cure the infection or treat the symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What questions are asked during an STD screening?

We respect your privacy and will not be asking personal questions. We will ask you if you are having any symptoms or have been exposed to a known infection.

How often should you be tested for STDs if you are sexually active?

Screening is recommended annually until age 25, and then only when requested. The CDC does recommend that individuals who are sexually active be tested for STDs once a year.

How accurate are STD screenings?

The accuracy of STD testing can depend on what type of STD is being tested. Most screenings are 99% accurate or more.

How long will I have to wait for my results?

It typically takes just a few days for us to get back the results of an STD screening.

How should I prepare for an STD screening?

To prepare for your STD screening you’ll want to avoid urinating up to an hour before (in case we need a urine sample), avoid douching or using vaginal creams, and write down any questions or concerns you have.

What is the difference between STD screening and testing?

The main difference between an STD screening and STD testing is when they are performed. A screening is performed before any symptoms are present and is a routine test. An STD test is done when symptoms are present to diagnose the condition.

What is a full screening for STDs?

A full screening for STD involves a urine test or a swab test, and a blood test if desired. These Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the most common STDs and can be tested by a urine sample or vaginal swab. A swab of your cervix is the most accurate test. A blood test would be used to diagnose HIV, hepatitis and syphilis.

How much will an STD screening cost?

Most insurance plans do cover routine STD screening every year, but this depends on your plan. The full cost if not insured is less than $100.
