Having a period can feel annoying at times, but for those who experience heavy bleeding during their periods, it can mean going through a box of tampons in a day or two. To help manage these periods, we often recommend endometrial ablation. By destroying the lining of the uterus, you can finally find some relief.
What is an Endometrial Ablation?
Endometrial ablation is a type of surgery that destroys the lining of the uterus (or endometrium) to reduce or stop how much you bleed during your period. At MAIA, we use the Minerva Endometrial Ablation System to perform this procedure.
It’s an FDA-approved, non-invasive procedure, and because it doesn’t require incisions or anesthesia and doesn’t involve any hormones, it has fewer complications and negative side effects than other options.
Who Needs an Endometrial Ablation?
Endometrial ablation is a treatment used for individuals who:
- Have unusually heavy periods (soaking through a pad or tampon every two hours or less)
- Experiencing bleeding that lasts longer than eight days
- Have abnormal uterine bleeding
- Experience a low red blood cell count due to blood loss (anemia)
It isn’t recommended for those who:
- Have certain uterine conditions like uterine cancer
- Have an active pelvic infection
- Are looking to become pregnant

Meet The TeamEndometrial Ablation Procedure with Minerva
With the Minerva Endometrial Ablation System, we can perform the endometrial ablation procedure using three simple steps.
After taking initial measurements of the uterine cavity, a silicone membrane will be placed inside the uterus. The membrane is then filled with argon gas that is heated with radiofrequency energy until it becomes plasma. The heat from the plasma will transfer to the endometrium, which will completely eliminate it.
The heat from the plasma will also heat the fluid in the uterus, destroying any endometrium that is not in contact with the silicone membrane.
During the procedure, patients typically feel mild to moderate cramping or some pressure. The whole procedure takes no more than 10 minutes.
Recovery
After endometrial ablation, you might have some cramping, discharge, and frequent urination, but beyond that, you should be able to return to most of your normal activities within a few days. Dr. Wolowick or Dr. Mitchell can give you a precise timeline for your recovery.
As for results, it can take a few months to see the final results, but your next period will likely be much lighter. Some patients stop having a period entirely.
